Podcast vs YouTube: Which One is Right for You? |
In a recent article, we introduced you to podcasts.
In another recent article, we provided you with a guide on how to create a successful podcast.
If you are interested in starting an online channel, and are undecided between a podcast and a YouTube Channel, perhaps this article will help you make the right decision.
While videos have been popular for years, podcasts have become popular in recent years, and for very good reason.
One of the main advantages of podcasting is its accessibility. Listeners can listen to podcasts while they're doing other things. For example, you can listen while you are driving, working out, cooking, or doing other activities.
This is very convenient, and something not as practical with a video. Of course, you can listen to a video while doing other activities, but this defeats the purpose.
Additionally, podcasts are a lot more personal than videos. Listeners will feel like they're having a personal conversation with the host.
Also, podcasts are much easier to create than videos. You need less equipment and less technical skills than if you were creating videos.
Finally, podcasts are ongoing. Each episode is a continuation of the previous episode. This suspense makes many listeners curious, and anxious to tune in to the next episode. With videos, it's usually a one shot deal. Once the average video is created and published, that's it! To create another, the creator must start from scratch.
As normal, podcasting does have its disadvantages.
They require a different level of technical knowledge and equipment. This is necessary, especially if you want to produce high-quality podcasts.
Another disadvantage is, podcasts are more difficult to attract and retain listeners compared to other platforms. Unlike YouTube, which only requires going to their site and searching for a video, podcasts are much harder to find.
YouTube is a probably the most powerful platform for content creators, offering a wide range of benefits.
One of the main advantages of YouTube is its visual nature, allowing creators to showcase their content through videos. This can be particularly beneficial for topics that require visual demonstrations or tutorials.
Additionally, YouTube has a huge audience, with billions of users worldwide. And it's getting bigger every day. This gives you the potential for a large reach and exposure for your content.
Like every platform, YouTube also has its drawbacks.
It is very competitive. Millions of videos are uploaded every day. It can be difficult to stand out and gain the support and interest from 122 million or so visitors that YouTube gets each day.
But don't let this stop you. Anything worth achieving is difficult. If it were easy, anyone could do it.
Also, creating high-quality videos requires equipment and editing skills. These are far more involved and technical than the equipment and skills needed for creating podcasts. This could be a problem for a new video creator.
Another problem with YouTube is some of its clientele.
There are tons and tons of excellent videos on YouTube. For just about anything you want to learn about, you can find it on YouTube. You just have to know how to search for it.
Unfortunately, there a also tons and tons of videos on YouTube that are nothing but junk.
Visitors have to sort out those videos that are a help, and others that are a hindrance. This can be very frustrating, and time consuming.
Finally, there are many YouTubers who are not very respectful of the copyright laws. There are many good movies that you can find on YouTube. In the opinion of this author, these movies should not be uploaded. In many situations, a movie that is uploaded to YouTube is eventually taken off their platform, when it is discovered that this is material which violates the copyright laws.
On the other hand, this is not likely to happen in a podcast. The podcaster is talking, ad libbing and improvising most of the time. The problem of violating a copyright is not likely to occur in a podcast. However, there could be unusual circumstances, but not very often.
By respecting these laws, the content creator can avoid potential legal issues and complications.
If your content is more audio-focused, such as interviews, discussions, or storytelling, a podcast is the better choice. Podcasts allow for a more intimate and personal connection with your audience, as they can listen to your content while doing other activities.
Additionally, podcasts are often consumed on-the-go, making it convenient for listeners.
On the other hand, if your content is more visual and requires demonstrations or tutorials, YouTube is the better choice.
YouTube allows you to showcase your content through videos, providing a more engaging and interactive experience for your audience.
Again, keep in mind that YouTube is a highly competitive platform, so it's important to have a clear niche and unique content, in order to increase your chances of standing out.
Ultimately, consider your content and audience preferences to make the right choice between being a podcaster or a YouTuber.
Before deciding between podcast and YouTube, think about the equipment and software you have access to, as well as your technical abilities.
Podcasting typically requires a good quality microphone and audio editing software, while YouTube may require a camera, video editing software, and graphic design skills.
Think about how comfortable you are speaking or being on camera. If you enjoy speaking and have a strong voice, podcasting may be a natural fit for you. However, if you are comfortable being on camera and enjoy visual storytelling, YouTube is the better choice.
Choose the platform that aligns with your resources and skills to ensure your enjoyment, and your success in creating useful content.
What is it you are tying to accomplish with this project?
Think about what you want to achieve with your content and how each platform aligns with your goals.
Are you looking to reach a specific audience or build a personal brand?
Are you aiming to monetize your content or simply share your passion with others?
Understanding your goals will help you make the right decision and choose the platform that best suits your needs.
Additionally, consider the long-term potential of each platform. Will podcasting or YouTube allow you to grow and expand your content in the future? By evaluating your goals and objectives, you can make a decision that sets you up for success in the long run.
Podcast or YouTube? Both great platforms! This is your choice.
Forgive me for interfering. If I had to make a choice between the two, I would do both. This makes perfectly good sense. This way, you will get a taste of what both platforms are all about. If one platform stands out as the one you like more, you can always devote more time to this platform, and less to the other.
This is something you may want to keep in mind.
I hope this article has helped you.
